Watchmaking Vlog Episode 5
In this watchmaking episode I demonstrate the practical exam for the British Horological Distance Watchmaking Course.
It has been two weeks since my last upload, basically the day I uploaded my last video, that night I had received an email which contained the plans to a practical exam for my watchmaking qualifications.
About 4 years I started the distance watchmaking course with the British Horological Institute. But After completing a few exams I really haven’t pursued it for the last couple years, the reason being my goal was never to work for someone doing repairs. It has always been in the manufacturing side, and as long as the knowledge and methods are right I didn’t see the point.
But at the beginning of the year I decided that I will pursue in completing the course over the next x amount of years. I think it will only benefit me and what I’m trying to do.
This Unit is about making a clock component, to 0.1mm tolerance for the dimensions that they provided within 2 weeks. I’m not going to show the plans because it is the property of the BHI and they might re-use the plans in the future.
The practical exams are very different to the other exams such as written and servicing/repair exams. If you want to complete those in your country you will need a Member of the BHI who will be your supervisor, so the BHI will send them all the exam stuff and then they will supervise you completing the exam on the set date and within time, and ensure that you don’t cheat.
So apart from turning 32, having my 14 month old daughter start to refuse to go to sleep at night, severely damaging my camera and a lense (which now has no working manual focus), this is where most of spare time went these last 2 weeks.
Queue making.
This brass part was probably the easiest and quickest to make, followed by the jumper lever from the gauge plate, but the silver steel post was the most complex and hardest. I struggled with this one, and it also had to be hardened and tempered to blue. Now I usually blue screws, but this is a lot larger and for some reason I struggled and on my 3rd attempt at trying to get a perfect even blue I had call it, as I needed to get it in the post office by 1pm on the 15th June. As you can see by my post office receipt I was calling it down to the wire. So I will just wait and see my results.
Also, at the beginning of the video I was making some screws to hold watch movement to my brass blank, they are pretty much ready to go. So back to working on my watch next week.
