TIG welding Aluminum is a difficult material to weld. There are so many things to worry about that don’t come into play with most other materials, such as hot short cracking, increased heat absorption and many other factors. This is one reason why some welders get nervous when it comes to certifying in Aluminum. In this video, we go over one of the more difficult certifications, the cluster.
Here are some things to remember when welding a cluster (with any material):
Use a Stubby Gas Lens Kit – A stubby gas lens kit will do two things for you. The first thing is that (like any gas lens kit) it will allow you to get maximum gas coverage over the weld, insuring you get the results you need to pass your certification. The second thing it will do for you (because it is “stubby”) is let you get your torch into all the areas around the cluster that may be difficult or impossible to reach with a standard torch package.
Use a Flex Head Torch – Like a stubby gas lens setup, a good flex head torch will make it much easier to twist and turn through the inside, restricted areas of the cluster.
Take your time – It is important to take your time while certifying for any welding procedure. You can start and stop as many times as necessary while making your weld, so don’t get out of position if you don’t have to.
