This video is to bring you a closer look at the Bommer BB5010-508-640 Hinge-Removable Pin-Oil Rubbed Bronze.
The BB5010 stands for the fact is a ball bearing wide throw hinge.
508 means that is 5″ tall and 8″ wide
640 means that is in a rube bronze finish.
This hinge is intended for thick doors where you need a wide throw application.
You can see that is fully mortise when the hinge is closed.
This is the security pin version, you can see that silver color screw, that is a set screw, you don’t want the pin to be driving out, you don’t want somebody from exterior to come and take out the pin.
The set screw which is called non removable pin once the set screw is seated and the pin is seated down then you tighten the set screw you can’t drive it out.
The pin has a grove in it when the screw is tighten it fits into that you can’t really pus the pin out of it.
I tried to get them out , you really can’t easily.
Unusually hinge on size but i do keep one on the shelf because occasionally someone needs a 5″ x 8″.
So a wide throw hinge is gonna be based on having a need to get your door around thick casing or a specific, so you need this hinge if the door is set dipper into the frame which is not uncommon.
Because the door is so forward into the frame and because the door is so far in you need to have a wide throw hinge to get the door open and pass around the wall or you have a situation where you’ve got the door installed into the frame standard but then you have much thicker casing.
There is a formula for determining that:
door thickness and you deduct hinge back set x 2 and you add your clearance and that’s gonna get you a dimension that you need for the hinge.
