Building a deck? Avoid this one basic mistake most people make: Using the incorrect fastener for metal connector hardware, aka joist hangers.
While it’s written into most code documents—yes, if you’re a DIYer or a pro you should get a building permit—use the correct length fasteners in your joist hangers.
Simply put, on a deck the 1 1/2-inch fasteners—screws or nails—should be installed in the “straight” holes, i.e., into the ledger board which is the board fastened to the house.
The diagonal holes—the holes that send a fastener into the joist—should be #10 x 2 1/2-inch structurally rated screws. In this case we used Spax’s HCR-X coated fastener and drove it with a Ridgid Power Tools cordless impact driver.
If using nails, the nail should be a exterior rated 16d nail. I drove them like buttah with Ridgid’s palm nailer.
In either case, the 1 1/2-inch fastener should only be used straight-on and not in the diagonal holes.
